Week 1: For this project, I wanted to do a video about suppressed anger and I'm using visual language to show what it's like and how that affects day-to-day life. I wanted to film different scenarios in different public settings such as school, work, and even online, in which these scenarios my character gets angry but doesn't express that anger because of how society would view them if they do. They have to put own façade or in this case a happy mask and act like they're not upset. I want to animate a smile face mask attached to a time bomb to represent those felling. Every time my character gets upset, the mask cracks and the timer counts down until eventually, it explodes. I might change some scenes to make the video more effective.
Week 2: I worked on and finished my animation. I won't be able to animate the mask exploding due to time constraints but it'll still crack. I'm starting to work in premiere pro.
Week 3 until the day of critique: After fixing my camera, I finally was able to film. However, there are a lot of changes. First, I didn't film any of the scenes from the storyboard except the office scene. I decided that it would be best to film that scene only because I feel like that was the best way of showing my theme which is having to constantly hold in anger because of society's perception of that person when they become angry. I also wanted added the theme of microaggressions in the corporate workplace because, for me, I think this helps with the theme of suppressed anger more because corporate America is mostly white and my character, a black woman, constantly has to suppress her emotions, her anger specifically because of the microaggressions and the stereotype of the angry black woman. I decided to repeat the same clips over again because I want to show the thought process of someone trying to suppress their anger. I also added in a bunch of text because I didn't want to have any spoken dialogue. I wanted the video to have this silent film-like vibe and I hate the way my voice sounds when it's recorded. I edited the video and added some sound effects and music and there it is. The finished project. I'm very satisfied with how it turned out.
