Project 2

Evan Hoyt

For my music video, I used my own song called, "System." It has a lot of strong rhythm and I wanted to convey an colorful and energetic video that went along with the track, but I also wanted there to  be some sort of narrative element to my video as well. To convey this narration in the video, I made a storyboard that showed a progression from simple, black & white animations to color video as the song progressed through the chorus and the bridge. At the same time, however, I wanted to keep an open mind for experimentation, and I tried not to over-plan my idea, and here are the results.

Process

For most of this video, I used 6 CU videos of my head and shoulders lipsyncing to the words: I set my camera up on a tripod so I wouldn't have to worry about camera movements, etc. I wanted the lighting in the video to be very dramatic, so I sat in a small closet in my apartment with the light off and used the flashlight on my phone. I found that moving it around while filming would dramatically change the shadows I cast as well as the shadows on my face, so I took some creative liberties during some of the takes. As far as the other footage I used, I also took a couple short videos of computers, scrolling text, and I created a 30 second animation of moving shapes that I used to overlay onto my videos in the beginning of the video.

After I had my footage, I spent a lot of time experimenting with effects and transitions. I wanted there to be a lot of movement, and most of all, I wanted to avoid creating a boring video. The raw and unedited videos clips I used didn't fit with the aesthetic I wanted for my video, so I used the invert effect and played around with the image settings until I found a look I liked. After I had secured that inital look, I applied it to all of the video clips and adjusted them from the default I created.

I also experimented with a lot of effects and blending modes. Some of the effects I used throughout the video were mosaic, channel blur, and solarize. Some of the blending modes I used in the video were Lighter Color (Add), Pin Light, and Hard Mix.
